Segovia Spain (October 18-20 2024)

We were up early for our 6:15 taxi to catch our 7:12 train to Segovia. Taxi drivers are confident drivers and seem to get us to our destination in a hurry so we probably could have waited another 15 minutes to book our taxi, but when traveling on a reserved train – I don’t like to take chances…

Because of our early departure there was no coffee at the hotel. And upon arrival at the train station we were the first to arrive, even before staff! So no coffee.

The first train arriving at the station was headed for Santander and was a small local train with no food service visible. I was fairly certain our train would be different since there was quite a crowd gathering on the platform. Thank goodness I was right. We have a train with 8 cars and a cafe car. I’m happy now.

We arrived in Segovia after 3.5 hours passing through some beautiful countryside. Grabbed a taxi waiting in line and arrived at our hotel 15 minutes later. Most of the old center is pedestrians only so there are a limited number of streets cars can drive. It makes walking around easier however you still have to watch out for those people that stop right in front of you to look at their phones…

Segovia is a beautiful very old city…

Cathedral
Alcazar
Alcazar moat!!
Roman aqueduct
Suckling pig, an emblematic dish of Segovia for centuries
More of the cathedral
House of the Peaks 15th century. The diamond design was both defensive and ornamental.
A unique Romanesque secular architecture structure with water from the aqueduct running directly underneath
Segovia’s Alcazar, inspirational for Walt Disney who saw it in 1930’s (Cinderellas castle). Otherwise over the centuries a fortress beginning in the 11th century
Former frequent visitors..
Some of the still existing wall
Rooftop at Alcazar
Looking out over the valley
Roman aqueduct
Coffee from the Alcazar cafe
This was fried suckling pig, a little chewy but tasty
Rooftop wine
A tapas morsel. Rick ate both as there were two. I declined but guessing it was an anchovy?
Inside the walls of the Alcazar

Segovia was a charming city with centuries of history. It is definitely worth a visit if you are looking for a Spanish destination near Madrid.
