The great Confiture (jam) debacle

June 9, 2024

The French love their jam – a lot – and we had a crisis at the Gite this morning! All three jars of jam were empty when we came downstairs for our petite dejeuner/breakfast. No one knows if they were full to begin with – but the bottom line was… ALL THE JAM WAS GONE!

A typical countryside French breakfast consists of coffee in a bowl, juice or fruit and bread, toasted with butter and jam. Yogurt also. The jam is an integral part of the toast and often added to the yogurt.

Tracie and I were disappointed but shrugged and enjoyed our buttered toast and plain yogurt. The French people were frantic. As each person or couple came into the dining room they would get their coffee and food ready and look around table for the jam only to be told there was’t any. Multiple people took turns looking back in the refrigerator, opening all the cupboards and various drawers hoping to be the hero of the day. Nothing nada zero. However one woman who was collecting little packets of jam on her journey brought out her jam stash of 4 and offered to share. That brought on some smiles.

Anyway. It was such a funny, frantic few moments while the search for jam went on, not just by one person, but many and all at the same time! It was a debacle for the owner and I’m wondering if he will hear about it…
