Rick and I finally are on our way to Iceland! We were one week away from making this trip in 2021, only to realize that Rick’s passport had just expired! We were fortunate in the timing because Iceland had just been hit with a new Covid outbreak and were able to receive a full credit. That said, prices have gone up since then and we spent almost double on this 2023 trip, but it was nice not to lose the money already paid!
Icelandair is very economical and offers complimentary drinks – but no snacks. They’re very upfront about this fact so we were prepared with our own snacks. They were on time both leaving PDX and arriving in Iceland. That’s a win in my books.
As we approached the airport exit doors a blast of cold wind pummeled everyone. A crowd formed as jackets were zipped and hats/hoods went on as it was raining and very windy. This would explain the rough landing we just experienced!
The FlyBus (our round trip bus between airport and our hotel) was very comfy and warm. We have a 50 minute drive from the airport to city center of Reykjavik and then to our hotel. We’re hoping to be dropped off at the hotel instead of a nearby bus stop. We shall see!!
We were dropped off at a bus stop but it was a 1-minute walk to our hotel. Our room was ready at 8 am so we were able to move in, unpack and nap. That felt so good. The thing about the flight is that it was 7 hours and 5 minutes in length and even though we landed at 6 am Iceland time, it was 11 pm Portland time. I wasn’t tired on the flight so no sleeping on the plane for me! 2 naps for the first day in Iceland and early to bed and I think I’ll be good for our first full day here.
About that, between naps we wandered around looking for an ATM, and decided it was time for a meal. We found a fish and chips place that hit the spot. I enjoyed the salad that came with the fried food as well. After nap #2, we ventured out again just to enjoy the sights and take a few photos.

The rainbow street where everyone takes selfies.

I remember this cool building from my last trip here. A clothing store…

Some streets were fairly quiet as most people would stop inside shops – a lot – to get warm. We were there with everyone!

Time to really warm up with a small latte. It hit the spot!

Our hotel includes a social hour (4-6 pm) so we made it just in time for a glass of red. Cheers!
While we enjoyed our wine and chatted about our day and plans for tomorrow, we noticed a long line of people just outside the hotel bar. It was a food truck selling hot dogs. Rick went to check it out as the line was nearly gone but he wasn’t willing to pay 650 or for a hot dog dinner. That turns out to be approximately 4.75 but we still hadn’t figured out the exchange rate. Next time…

Tomorrow is the Golden Circle tour which I have experienced in 2019, but this will be new for Rick. Forecast is windy and 32-34 degrees. I’m dressing warm!
