Brooklyn NY Visit Feb 2023

It is now April, but I haven’t forgotten my visit to NYC.

A week in the NYC area has been so fun! I have taken a walk every morning this past week and have found myself totaling between 8 and 12 miles per day. The morning walk might be 4-8 miles, with the afternoon/evening walk another 2-4. The usual routine seems to be walk in the morning with a coffee shop as a final destination, and then later in the afternoon we all walk either to a restaurant, or before dinner at home. It’s absolutely amazing how many miles a person can walk in a day when not using a vehicle! My sites have included the Brooklyn Bridge, neighborhoods of Dumbo, Prospect Park, Prospect Heights, Ft. Greene Park, Downtown Brooklyn, Clinton Hill (Brian’s neighborhood), Carroll Gardens (a dinner attempt), Park Slope and a day in Manhattan.

My first morning walk was to the Brooklyn Bridge. Many years ago Tracie and I walked halfway across from the Manhattan side of the river, but it was so cold that we turned around and came back. This morning the sun was out and although it was not warm, the weather made it a very walkable trek. Bonus was it was not very crowded and in the Dumbo neighborhood which sits between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, an excellent view of the Manhattan Bridge is possible.

My second morning walk was through Prospect Park. Its a beautiful park designed for the community. People of all shapes, sizes and age were walking, running or cycling around the park. The road is more of a pathway that excludes vehicles (except for Park vehicles). There were trails and pathways through the park as well, with the highlight being a lake occupied by geese, a couple of swans and seagulls. It was a rainy day but still a nice walk.

Harry's Wall honors Harry Murphy, co-founder of the Prospect Park Track Club. The wall was built in in 1874 as an equestrian wall, and later was named to honor Harry. Many races within the park begin and finish here.

Brian, Francesca and I took a morning stroll, grabbed egg, bacon and cheese sandwiches and found a sunny spot to enjoy.

Brooklyn’s library and a walk into Fort Greene Park made up another day or two.

The final long walk was along the Hudson River looking into Manhattan. An old sugar factory was under construction and although we couldn’t confirm what it will be, its likely to be a mix of retail and condos. Regardless, the views from the building will be fantastic!

My final day in NY included a trip to the Guggenheim Museum for an Alex Katz exhibit (mid-20th century abstract expressionist art), as well as one from Nick Cave: Forothermore (material experimentation). Both were really interesting. And of course there is the architectural beauty of the museum itself!

My week is over. It was so fun to be in New York City (Brooklyn specifically) and to visit with Brian and Francesca. The weather was decent. A couple of rainy days and a few sunny and chilly. I have a long list of places to visit next trip! Until then…
