Days 2 and 3 on the El Camino Real

September 26 and 27, 2021

I was so tired last night that I couldn’t find the energy to get the blog updated! 18.5 miles had both of us exhausted!

Back to yesterday. We knew it would be a long day, and according to our directions we should have gone 17 miles; however the first day was supposed to be just over 15, and it was a solid 17 miles so we add a mile plus to the Novato day. We almost nailed it!

The Petaluma Hotel

We so enjoyed our adorable hotel. I neglected to post a photo yesterday so here you go.

An early start to Novato was needed as we had 18 miles to walk. It actually turned out to be 18.5 miles, but who’s counting? The first thing we noticed right outside the Petaluma hotel was a street fair. It was an antique show and stretched out for several blocks. We obviously weren’t going to add anything to our pack loads so we walked down the street and onto our pathway.

The roads today were so quiet and different than yesterday. We walked past cows, horses, baby turkeys and cute pigs.

A leisurely lunch stop in Novato was required and we chose Blue Bard. Delicious salads and a great outdoor space we’re enjoyed by both of us.

From there we took step after step for another 6 miles to our hotel. Finally! We did nothing after arrival except shower and get ready for tomorrow. That was a rough day!

The next morning we looked forward to a short day. We were so right. Less than 12 miles, bike trails most of the way, and a mission in San Raphael.

The bike path began .2 mile from our hotel and went on for over a mile. During the course of the day the bike path came and went but it was great!

The oldest single room school in CA

The Mission San Raphael Archaengel came up quickly. The Mission is now used as an elementary school. The church was open but the gift shop was not. Once again we have no “Camino” stamp.

We decided to stop for coffee or tea beverage before heading to our hotel and found a cute place that also served lunch. It was hopping, so we ordered and sat at an outside table.

The final 4 miles to our hotel went quickly. It was almost all bike trail, and in particular a pedestrian bridge that had good views of San Quentin and the Bay cities.

There was also a fabulous tunnel. and because they can lock the gates at night, it was sparkling clean, and beautiful!

When you pass a Trader Joe’s you must go inside. A couple extra protein bars will do the trick! Arrived at our hotel and we’re early. The good news was they had a pool and hot tub and we were welcome to use them or at least sit by the pool. So relaxing and great on the feet.

All in all today was a great walking day. Not too warm, cloudy in the early morning with sun breaking through. We could hear Highway 102 but didn’t have to go near it. And our feet are thankful for the somewhat shorter day, as am I!
