Day 2 Elkhorn Crest Trail

Somewhere along the trail to Summit Lake

We hoped to get an early start to the day but were so exhausted from the previous day… we didn’t break camp until 8:30. That is far too late when the terrain is uncertain and we had 9 miles to cover.

The better part of the day was spent on fairly flat trail. It was so enjoyable! The mountains were more treed and less rocky than yesterday. Much easier to hike on…

We made better time on the trail in comparison to yesterday. We happily marched along and enjoyed nearly the entire day. All of us should have taken more time preparing to walk or hike longer distances, but wildfires and smoke and a potential Covid worry slapped us hard about three weeks before our trip. Lost momentum definitely contributed to our weaker stamina. However we ended the day at the 9-mile mark and set up camp on the beautiful Summit Lake.

Before heading down to the lake we were low on water. There had been no water sources along the trail this day and we were doing our best not to waste any water. As luck would have it, 5 miles into the day we came upon a spring which filled our nearly empty bottles up and the smiles were abundant. We thought we’d have to wait to our destination to get water. Trail bonus!

Summit Lake had actual campground choices which felt luxurious. We picked our tent spots and got busy setting up camp.

Next on the list of “to do’s”, Tracie whipped her water filter pump out and prepared to get the clean water flowing. How wonderful it was to drink and drink and wash our hands and faces! And have water for freeze dried meals.

Although fire danger was “extreme” and no campfires were allowed, we sat around the “cold fire” and enjoyed our nice warm dinners. Tracie and I each enjoyed meals from Next Mile Meals. They make keto freeze dried meals and both of us agreed they are delicious. Rick had a macaroni beef meal that he didn’t love. I offered him a different choice before we left home but he wanted his own selection. Maybe next time?

Summit Lake is a perfect place to spend a night, or maybe two. The fish were jumping, and it’s so quiet and peaceful. What is there not to love?!
