A day hike in Kanarra Falls, Utah

Let me begin by saying the hike today was a bit more difficult than we imagined. Perhaps it was the fact that neither of us had ever taken a slot canyon trek, or maybe it was the rushing waters, or maybe it was just the first hike of the year that included bouldering, a sport I haven’t dealt much with!

Regardless it was beautiful.

No photos were taken of the boulders we had to scramble over. The trail was not flat, or even or predictable. We crossed the water several times and thankfully Tracie brought her walking sticks so we had something stable to help cross the water. It made it easier to see how deep it was and kept us from falling. A couple times I held on for my life (exaggeration…) not knowing how the speedy current would work with my feet.

In the end we decided not to go all the way into the canyon because the dark clouds were gathering and we could hear thunder. It’s never a smart idea to be in a slot canyon when it rains.

This is a hike we would both love to do again. Perhaps a little later in the year when the snow has finished most of its melt.

After the hike we drove north to Cedar City taking the highway, not the freeway. Along the way we screeched to a halt when we saw a huge flock of sheep with more babies than either of us have ever seen.

And across the street was a dilapidated old building with gorgeous purple clover covering the nearby field.

Into Cedar City we drove and the sky continued to darken. Tracie stopped at the local police department to inquire about a restroom. I had to snap a photo of that silly lady!

Finally on the way back to St. George the lightning, thunder and the largest rain drops I’d ever seen started to fall. I’m so happy we’re not hiking now!
