Bagni San Filippo to Radicafoni – making our own adventures

Sunday October 7

I was awake at 6 before my alarm went off, so I just got up and sat in the hallway to charge my phone. What I didn’t realize until arriving in Italy is the adaptor I have must be an older version. It is round in shape, and has two slightly chubby prongs. Almost all of the outlets have 3 smaller thin prongs and my chubby ones just can’t squeeze in. Thank goodness Tracie let us borrow her adaptor so between her adapter and my attachment which allows 3 devices to plug in we can get everything back to 100%. Since we were in two different rooms last night and Sue didn’t have her backpack or her electronics bag, I made do.

Now, morning requires an espresso for me so I walked back up to the bar near the hot springs. Dopio espresso with a little steamed milk and a cookie. I could have asked for a sandwich but I thought we would have breakfast together later. We ran out of time before we had to leave.

The bar close to the natural hot springs

Sue was up and ready to try out the hot springs pool. We both went over to the pool and put our feet and lower legs in. It wasn’t as hot as we expected but it felt great.

Now that we’re revived I noticed our German friends who had been waiting for a taxi to Radicofani walking past. I asked them if there would be room for us in their taxi and they enthusiastically said yes, but he would be here in about 10-15 minutes. We jumped out of the water and headed back inside to pack and get out the door.

It all worked and we shared the cost of the taxi which was helpful.

We arrived in Radicafoni 20 minutes later and found the Bar Stella which is where Suzanne’s bag was sitting…

The bar owner must be a rock n roll guy judging from the photos on the walls. We guessed most of the artists. Of course the music playing in the bar was all 60’s to early 80’s. It was a fun throwback!

We stayed at Bar Stella until he closed at Noon. Then we waited outside until 2, at which time we walked to our reserved house. Yes we have a whole house! It’s pretty cool too. We would have cooked but the grocery store was not open…

Our adorable casa

Because of time constraints and/or lack of services I have now had 2 cookies for the day and two Dopio espressos to go with them. Around 4 pm after looking around the town I had seen a bar open and knew where our dinner restaurant was. We had finished doing our laundry so headed to the bar for a beer and a snack. We found chips… and beer. It will have to do!

The church across the piazza is old and simple. The window over the altar had captured the sun and you could hardly see inside! I’m hoping they never have mass late in the day or the congregation would be blind by the time they exited!

There is a lot of history here. A cool statue of Locco stands near the church overlooking the valley below. He looks like he lived when Christopher Columbus was alive. I must research him.

This town is beautiful, filled with flowers and care.

Notice the tower at the top of the hill?

We have no wifi at the house but the bar did. I was able to finish a blog post, download some pics and get somewhat caught up. Those are the best bar stops…

We finally agreed it was time for dinner. Our host had made reservations for 7:45 so we arrived a little early and realized the restaurant was already open and serving customers! We walked in and gave the name of our accommodation and were seated. This place was excellent, The Grotto, and very inexpensive.

We enjoyed two salads, two pasta dishes, half carafe of house wine (Sangiovese) and a bottle of still and frizzante water… 26.50. The pasta dishes were huge and we each ate less than half the plate. Once again we forgot to see what other plates looked like before ordering.

It was a short walk back to our casa and it was time for bed! Tomorrow we plan to be up and out of the house by 6:30. We shall see!
