A visit to Quebec City’s Le Monastere des Augustines, an Adventure Within (Part 1)

Monday March 6

Tracie and I landed in Quebec City Monday after taking a redeye flight from San Francisco, CA.  We waited to check into the Monastere a day after our flight so we would be rested from having no sleep on the flight over.  Even though this is a relaxing spa vacation for us, we didn’t want to begin our time sleep deprived.

We met our hostess Nathalie at the front desk. She greeted us warmly and brought us to our room via the elevator. After dropping our bags off in our room we began a tour of the facility.  Our floor, the 4th, has modern rooms en suite. The 3rd floor has modern rooms with shared bathrooms. The restaurant where we will eat all of our meals was quiet but smelled wonderful.  The fitness classes are in the basement floor. There are elevators that will take you wherever you need to go, but there are also stairs. We choose the stairs!

During our stay we will be able to attend three classes each day (yoga/pilates/meditation/tai chi, etc) as well as massage x 2, holistic health consultation and movement, breathing and posture evaluation/assistance.  Amazing! And we are both so excited to begin such an interesting journey.

Tuesday March 7

After our tour with Nathalie, she left us in the restaurant to have lunch and fill out our health questionnaires.  Tracie had the first time slot so she had to get hers filled out and was on her way. When she was finished it was my turn. Let me just say it was such an interesting process. It was our choice on what we wanted to work on and along with health improvement suggestions, we were both given new tools for our goals. We have a followup consultation before we leave, and then 22 days after our final consultation, she will call us at home to see how we are doing. Did I say how cool that is??

Next up was our first class. This was a yoga/pilates class. We walked in, saw what equipment people were grabbing (mats and bolsters) and took our space. It was a good class since both Tracie and I are beginners when it comes to yoga. It felt good to be stretched out and worked out. Since we were the only two English speakers in the group, a couple of the women helped translate when the instructor couldn’t find the words. That was so nice.  The workout room was in the basement which is more of the original monastery. It was beautiful!

Dinner-time finally was here. In this facility lunch is larger than dinner. We weren’t hungry at lunch so both of us had soup and salads (delicious). Dinner was a buffet filled with delicious looking healthy salads, and two soups. One soup which was the main course, was a broth that you added proteins to. Choices were venison, fish and a vegetarian option.  I didn’t want any of the proteins so I stuck with the squash soup and salads, bread roll and a small dessert. What I didn’t think about was that I really didn’t have much to eat this day and more importantly only one cup of coffee. Guess what I woke up with… yes a caffeine-induced headache and starvation.
