New Orleans French Quarter

Our last morning in Nola was spent on a walking tour with a little history of the french quarter and a visit to the St Louis Cemetery. Residences fell into categories of slave quarters, duplexes and homes. Most homes have one door and two large windows at street level. A duplex has one door and one window per unit. A slave home was very small, located behind the main home, and looked like the roof pitch ended the home if that makes sense, like the back portion of the unit was cut off. Two slaves per room.

Today the french quarter is all commercial and a national historical site. Even though there are many residences and apartments all buildings must maintain the exterior structures with no changes. Interior can change but the exterior appearance must remain as is.
