Canterbury Cathedral

This cathedral is amazing! It was founded in 597 but was rebuilt in the Romanesque style from 1070 to 1077 due to a fire that burned the original structure. As with most large old cathedrals, work continued to be done over the years as late as 1174, this time in the Gothic style.

It’s difficult to take photos of the cathedral because of the scaffolding and work being done. It will be 4 years before it’s done but it should be like new by then…

The Bishop Thomas Beckett was murdered in the cathedral in 1170 which brought a flow of pilgrims to his shrine. Because of the large numbers of visitors, the cathedral was extended. Additional work was done in the late 14th century to make way for the present structures. I think you have to be an expert to tell which timeframe each section was built, but the stained glass and ceilings were beautiful.

The font below was dismantled when it looked like it would be destroyed and reassembled later.
